Mater Dei Prep Appoints Director of Lacrosse Operations

This spring, Mater Dei Prep (MDP) will introduce lacrosse to its athletic program for the first time in school history. In anticipation, Andrew Eastwood of Sea Bright has been named director of lacrosse operations for the school.

“We are so excited to add Andy Eastwood to our staff,” said MDP Interim Athletic Director Lance Bennett. “He will play a pivotal role in developing both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs.” In addition to his duties as director, Mr. Eastwood will also act as the boys’ lacrosse coach. A search is currently underway for a girls’ coach.

For spring 2017, Mater Dei Prep looks to field a junior varsity team for both boys and girls. This first season is a “total unknown,” said Mr. Eastwood, who is hoping to schedule eight to 10 games for the upcoming season. Current MDP athletes will be encouraged to try out for the teams. According to Mr. Eastwood, “Lacrosse is similar to basketball and soccer. It’s about playing the angles and moving your feet and having good hand-eye coordination.”

He expects to develop a boys’ varsity team within three years and a girls’ varsity team in two. “The first few seasons are all about instruction” and growing the program, he explained.

Mr. Eastwood has known MDP football coach Dino Mangiero for years and had been talking to him about the great strides the school has made since they privatized in 2015. When the opportunity arose to help the school through a sport he loves, he jumped at the chance. For him, the director job is an opportunity to start a “new chapter” for MDP and “present another reason for kids to attend a great school.”

Formerly the boys’ varsity lacrosse coach at Rumson-Fair Haven High School (RFH), Mr. Eastwood played Division 1 lacrosse at Rutgers University in the 1980s. In 1997, he founded the RFH Boys and Girls Youth Lacrosse program and subsequently helped organize board approval for a boys’ lacrosse team at RFH. From 2014 to 2016, he headed the RFH boys’ varsity team, leading them to Shore Conference Championship titles in 2014 and 2016 and a Group 1 State Championship in 2015. Off the field, Mr. Eastwood is a vice president at Landesbank Baden Wurttemberg in New York.

“What he has accomplished with so many student-athletes on the field is remarkable,” added Mr. Bennett about Mr. Eastwood, “but even more outstanding is the tremendous character and integrity he displays, which perfectly aligns with our vision here at Mater Dei Prep.”
