One of the surefire local signs of fall is the annual Thompson Park Day celebration, hosted by the Monmouth County Park System. This popular event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 11 am to 5 pm, when throngs of area residents and visitors are expected to flock to Thompson Park, 805 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft, to kick off an awesome autumn.

Parking and admission are free, with a fee charged for certain activities.

The day’s agenda will include a doggie costume contest, scarecrow contest, pumpkin painting, wagon rides, live entertainment, fall festival games, rides, fall sports activities, relays, kids’ races, ceramics, pottery demonstrations, archery, canoeing, climbing wall, pie-eating contests, food vendors, and much more. Theatre Barn Stage Entertainment   

• Kids on the Block Puppet Show from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm

• “It’s the Wolf!” Puppet Show from 1:15 to 2 pm

• The Curse of the Silver Pearl Swashbuckling Spooktacular from 2:45 to 3:30 pm

• The Little Rockers Band from 4:15 to 5 pm

Strolling Entertainment    

• Freaky Frankie and his Monster Balloonz from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm

• Balloon Twisting Artist from 1 to 4 pm

• Pirate Stiltwalker from 1 to 5 pm

Strut Your Mutt Doggie Costume Contest: Halloween is something worth howling about, so deck out your dog as something fun, silly, or scary. The whole family can even get in the act and dress up together! The contest will be held at noon and 3 pm. Prizes will be awarded for most original, scariest, funniest, prettiest, and best canine/human combo. Pre-registration costs $10 until Oct. 9; registration at the event costs $15. The contest is sponsored by Friends of the Monmouth County Parks. For details, call 732-975-9735.

Annual Scarecrow Contest: Thompson Park will provide the framework and stuffing; you supply the face, outer covering (clothes, etc.) and imagination. Prizes will be awarded and afterward, your scarecrow creation is yours to take home. The cost is $10 to pre-register, or $12 at the event. For event-day registration, frames are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 732-224-1367 for details.
