September 8

Ninth Annual Toast to Dennis – A Night of Remembrance – 7:00 p.m. at Eagle Oaks Country Club, 20 Shore Oaks Drive, Farmingdale. The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski Memorial Fund will be hosting its annual gala to celebrate his life and memory, as well as to honor all veterans and active duty servicemen/women in attendance. The fund sponsors programs for injured soldiers, scholarships to Lt. Zilinski’s alma mater, Christian Brothers Academy, and support for military members and their families. A donation of $150 per person is required for an invitation to the event, which will include a cocktail hour, sit-down dinner, dancing with music by The Infernos, and more. It will also feature a reverse auction to assist the fund in sponsoring service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD and/or traumatic brain injuries. Several warriors who have returned from combat are expected to attend the affair. This year’s distinguished honorees are Tom and Marie Dolan of Avon-by-the-Sea and Ron and Kim Jaeger of Rumson. 42^nd Annual NJ Friends of Clearwater Environmental & Music Festival – at Brookdale Community College, Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. New Jersey’s oldest and largest environmental and music festival will be on the lawn at Larrison Hall Commons at Brookdale from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on  September 9 and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 10. This free family-friendly event combines information on protecting the environment with live music performed by top-rated performers in a variety of styles, from rock and soul to jazz, folk, and blues, on three stages.

The Killian Stage and the Seeger Stage will feature musical performances by The Wag, After the Reign, Al-Vis & Friends, The Cobra Brothers, Poppa John Bug, JT & Bleeders, The O’Neill & Martin Band, George Wirth, The Jody Joseph Band, Mary McCrink, and Arlan Feiles & the Broken Hearted. The Circle of Song Stage will feature Ingrid Heldt, Jim Crawford, Tommy and Abby Anton, Dale Lakata, Rosemary Wright and her Storytellers, Lydia Adams Davis, Jan Christensen, and Isis Ra and Friends. Strut Your Mutt Dog Show Benefit for The Brodie Fund – 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at The Boondocks Fishery, 1 Marine Park in Red Bank. Rain date is October 17. The Brodie Fund raises funds to offer financial assistance, through grants, to families who have pets fighting cancer. The event will include a dog show with prizes in all categories and overall best in show; hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, salads, popcorn and refreshments; live music throughout the day; vendors, gift baskets, 50/50, and more. KNIT WIT Craft Sale – at Mary Mother of God Church, 19 Cherry Tree Farm Road in Middletown. Held 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on September 11 and 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on September 12. Come and see the beautiful handmade items at this annual craft sale, just in time for winter wearing or holiday gifting. From heirloom-quality knit and crochet items to whimsical toys and tiaras, there will be hundreds of items to purchase at very reasonable prices. All items for sale are handmade by volunteers and donated. All proceeds from the sale are donated to local charities and families in need.

Shrewsbury Chorale Open Rehearsals – 7:45 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County, 1475 West Front Street in Lincroft. The Shrewsbury Chorale, one of Monmouth County’s premier choruses, has planned an exciting season of choral performances for 2017-2018, singing a wide variety of music ranging from lighter popular fare to choral masterpieces.

If you enjoy choral singing and would like to join a high quality smaller ensemble and are up for a challenge, come to their open rehearsals. They practice weekly on Tuesday nights from 7:45 to 10:00 p.m. Scores are provided and there is no charge. They are accepting singers of all voice parts, high school age and up. Wind & Sea Festival – 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Bayshore Waterfront Park in Port Monmouth. This family-friendly event celebrates all things water. Activities include stand-up paddling, kayaking, fishing, sailing, beach volleyball, kite flying, crabbing, sand castle building, seining, shelling, sand casting, children’s crafts, storytelling, naturalist activities, and more. Most activities are free, but some may have a fee. Admission and parking are free.  Parking is available at the Belford Ferry Terminal, 10 Harbor Way, Belford. History of the 1950s and ‘60s through Popular Song Concert – 2:00 p.m. at the Middletown Township Public Library, 55 New Monmouth Road in Middletown. Marc Black, an eclectic folk-rocker who has been noted for his “timeless songs, deep grooves, and excellent playing” and inducted into the New York Chapter of the Blues Hall of Fame in June of 2014, will perform. Sixth Annual Taste of Atlantic Highlands – 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. This popular event features a tour of local eateries, boutiques and retail establishments where guests will be treated to an array of food, beverages, cocktails, and raffles. Many businesses offer special promotions. Attendees may walk from place to place or ride the free classic trolley or limo bus. Transportation will be available until 4:30 p.m. to shuffle people back and forth from the hub of the event, Veteran’s Park. The list of participants includes restaurants, cafes, specialty food and drink sellers, international cuisine purveyors, a craft brewery, and more. Retail shops offer fine art and hand-crafted art, gifts, jewelry and décor, vintage books, and other merchandise and fine services.  Tickets are $35 per adult, $5 for children age 6-17, and children under five are free. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees are reminded to have their passports stamped at participating locations in order to be eligible for gift raffles, giveaways, and door prizes. Legal Aid Society Annual Wine Tasting – 5:30 p.m. at 4 JG’s Vineyards, 127 Hillsdale Road in Colts Neck. The community is invited to attend this most important fundraising event of the year for the Legal Aid Society in a beautiful and historic venue. Cost is $85 per person, which includes award-winning wines, soft drinks, savory and bountiful food, and music throughout the evening. All proceeds support the Legal Aid Society. Deep Cut Orchid Society Annual Orchid Auction – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Dearborn Market, Route 35 in Holmdel. Magnificent orchids from world-renowned growers from Ecuador, Brazil, Taiwan and Hawaii as well as the states will be available. The auction is the largest in the tristate area and will offer high-quality plants for amateurs as well as professional orchid lovers. The auction is the primary fundraising event for the nonprofit society. Cash or credit cards will be accepted; admission and parking are free. Food is available in the market.
