Six area community leaders, professionals and volunteers will be honored during the 33rd annual Wilbur Ray Scholarship Dinner hosted by Brookdale Community College. The awards are named for the late Wilbur Ray, former Brookdale police sergeant and an active volunteer in the Long Branch community.
This year’s honorees include John Jones, of North Plainfield; Mary Nicosia, of Red Bank; Michael Perry, of Ocean Township; the Rev. Terrence Porter, of Scotch Plains; Sheri Lynn Stanford, of Trenton; and Maureen Taylor, of Somerset. Proceeds from the dinner benefit the Wilbur Ray Scholarship Program, which supports students of color at Brookdale. The first in New Jersey, the Catsbury Park Cat Convention is positioned to become the premier feline event on the East Coast. The two-day weekend event will assemble under one roof to bring together the cat-loving population, along with many of social media’s favorite felines. Informative sessions and seminars will be presented by respected advocates and speakers on behalf of cat rescue, health and behavior. Cat-related products and innovative merchandise will be available to purchase from vendors.

FRIENDS OF JJ FUNDRAISER

A Ladies Night Out is being hosted by Friends of JJ, a nonprofit benefiting over 21 hospitals across NJ and NY. Close to 100 ladies are expected to come out for a night to Sip, Shop and Support. The event will include boutiques, vendors, wine, gourmet buffet and a fabulous gift raffle. Proceeds from the event will support the mission of bringing smiles to children and families affected by pediatric diseases in memory of JJ Messana who battled neuroblastoma for eight years at MSKCC until he passed away at age 27. The popular Red Bank Street Fair is filled with crafters, food vendors, rides, and shopping promising plenty of fun for everyone. Come enjoy Red Bank on a beautiful fall day. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Red Bank Police Benevolent Association. The Street Fair takes place on Broad Street (between Peters Place and Front Street) and on Monmouth Street (between Broad Street and Maple Avenue).

Fort Monmouth Recreation Center is hosting a Spring Craft Fair on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 2566 Guam Lane in Tinton Falls. Come out and support the more than 40+ homegrown artists and artisans. Shop for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations, communions, weddings or for yourself. Craft Show admission and parking are free.
Cooking Demos will be at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Chef Stephen Wolff of Culinary Creations, LLC, presents cooking class demonstrations and tastings at the Spring Craft Show. See an overview of basic kitchen skills, including simple knife skills, then enjoy a tasting and Q&A with the chef. Note: Space is limited to 14 per demo. The cost is $5 per person (cash or check only). Registration will be accepted starting at 9 a.m. the day of the event.

The Children’s Auxiliary of Visiting Nurse Association Health Group (VNA) will host its bi-annual “The Power of the Purse” Ladies’ Night Out and Purse Auction to benefit the VNA’s Children and Family Health Institute (CFHI). Guests will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and an Asian dinner buffet while browsing and taking chances on nearly 80 purses. The evening will also include a silent auction featuring the hottest handbags from luxury designers. . Tickets: $150.
