Saving With Cindy: Black Friday

Cindy Livesey Living Rich With Coupons Saving

If you are a diehard Black Friday shopper, I have some bad news for you: Black Friday isn’t actually the best day to shop.

But – you’re still in luck! I’ve done tons of research on the best days to shop – and I’m going to spill all the details. Some facts you should know before we start:

The best time to buy toys is actually the day before Thanksgiving.

The best time to buy electronics is at the beginning of November.

And the best time to buy sporting goods and apparel online is on Thanksgiving day or Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving).

If you are on the hunt for TVs, appliances or jewelry, then Black Friday is 100 percent your day to shop. Go hang out on line, deal with crowds, and have the full Black Friday in-store experience!

Here are some tips to help make your Black Friday shopping a success:

1. Make a list of your gift list items, and list those items by the stores where you plan to purchase them.

2. Know your prices and do your homework, because not everything is a great deal.

3. Know your store’s return policy for Black Friday, which may differ from the store’s regular return policy.

4. Shop with a bag and not a cart. It’s much easier to maneuver a bag around a store than a big cart – especially if the store is very crowded.

5. Sign up for the store’s loyalty programs. In some cases, loyalty members get a first look at upcoming deals, or even discounts exclusive to members.

6. Create a budget for each person on your gift list – and stick to it. It will help prevent those in-the-moment purchases from happening.

My favorite day to shop for holiday gifts is actually Thanksgiving night and Cyber Monday. I have found some of the best deals during those times. Here are some tips to help you get the best prices when online shopping:

1. Shop ahead of the sales, and place items in your online cart. When sales begin, you are one step ahead of the game. This works great on sites like Amazon when they have their flash sales. These sales start at a certain time and last until they either sell out or time runs out. Having the items in your cart ahead of time makes it easier to grab it the minute it goes on sale.

2. Use sites like or to compare prices before you make your online purchase

3. Use browser extensions like Price Blink or Honey. These extensions show you prices instantly while you are shopping. For instance, if I’m on Amazon looking at a toy, Price Blink will pop up at the top of my browser and tell me what the next lowest price is. If there is a price lower than the one I’m viewing, I can select to compare prices including shipping costs (if any).

4. Shop first through cash-back websites such as to earn cash back on your online purchases.

5. Make sure the website you are purchasing from is secure from possible fraud. To make sure, look at the website address on top of the page. If the address starts with https vs. http, then the site is secure, and safe to put in your credit or debit card information.

6. And visit to view some of the best online deals we find daily!

Get your gift list ready, set a budget, and you’ll have the best holiday shopping experience.
