Who is in Control During Times Like These?

By Glen J. Dalakian Sr.

With everything happening in the U.S. today, who is really in control? When you pull back the curtain, who is tugging the strings to redirect our focus and send millions in the right direction for our economic future? Many may not realize it, but I believe the American entrepreneur will have a substantial impact in moving our nation through perilous waters toward higher, safer ground. Yes, there are many widely known and influential names out there – politicians, entertainers, military leaders, authors, economists, etc. – but this country was founded by a “grassroots movement” filled with business-minded people who understood the connection between liberty and commerce.

So what can we, as entrepreneurs, do about this incredible responsibility? Do we ignore the abilities within us and wait to see what happens? Do we get so focused on ourselves and the survival of the entities we have built and hope someone else will come to the rescue? Or do we take the bull by the horns, as we have done so many times before? Don’t underestimate the power of your example, hard work and commitment to your team. These are all critically important to turning our nation from its current trajectory back to the place we know America must be, a land of opportunity like no other on the planet.

Make it your business to go beyond your business. Of course, you must stabilize your company in these rocky and uncertain times or else you will have more distractions and less time to focus on the greater needs of the community at large. But plan to do both. You can. You have been a multi-tasker on many occasions, and this is possibly the most important time of our lives.

Is there injustice out there? No doubt. Are there discriminations on many levels? Always have been. Are people hurting and confused like never before? Perhaps true. But what we do in the face of these circumstances will determine the future of our nation and our children’s children.

Put your mind to it. We know where your focus has been the last few months, and these moving targets of the unknown are distracting and, at times, even frightening. But you know better and can latch on to ideas, concepts and strong people to see through to the brighter future we all hope and pray is coming. We cannot cure all the ills of this world, but if every level-headed, innovative and committed entrepreneur will drive the ball toward the goal, America will benefit. At a time when “tear it down” is a loud outcry, I challenge you to build it up. Why? Because I for one know you can, and we have never needed the power in you more than now.

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” –Mark Twain
