Update on Middlesex County Drownings, Electrocution Ruled Out

On Monday afternoon, two adults and one child were found dead in the pool outside their Middlesex County home.

The victims were an 8-year-old girl; her 32-year-old mother, Nisha Patel; and her 62-year-old grandfather, Bharat Patel.

A neighbor who heard screaming coming from the backyard just after 4 pm Monday called the police.

“We believe the mother was screaming from inside the pool for help,” police spokesman Frank Sutter said at a press conference.

Once officers arrived on scene in East Brunswick and pulled the bodies from the pool. CPR was performed, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities initially began investigating a possible electrocution, but that theory was ruled out Tuesday afternoon.

“This is a devastating day for our entire community,” said East Brunswick Police Chief Frank LoSacco. “It is too early to determine exactly what happened. We are working with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and will release information as it develops.”

Other family members were said to be inside the home when the incident occurred. Neighbors say the young family had moved into the house just a few weeks ago. According to property records, the house was last sold in April.

Law enforcement officials said the pool varied in depth, with a section several feet deeper than the rest. Investigators have not determined how all three family members drowned.
