Upcoming Events at Congregation B’nai Israel of Rumson

By Lori Draz

Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) hopes everyone is having a wonderful end of summer, and they invite you to learn more about and join in some of the activities at this welcoming congregation.

CBI is excited about the upcoming High Holy Days. Selichot, traditionally held the Saturday evening before Rosh Hashanah, is a service that sets the mood and tone for the High Holy Days. It is preceded by a program, often on the theme of repentance and transformation. This year, Selichot will be observed in person and virtually at CBI on Saturday, Sept. 17 beginning at 8:15 pm with Havdalah.

CBI’s High Holiday services will be both live and livestreamed this year and will feature CBI’s Rabbi Doug Sagal as well as Guest Cantor Hazzan Rebecca Garfein.

Rosh Hashanah service begins Sunday, Sept. 25 at 7 pm. Services for the first day of Rosh Hashanah are on Monday, Sept. 26 at 9 am. A fun and interactive family service will be held in the afternoon. There will be a Tashlich service, celebrating the symbolic shedding of sins at an outdoor location in the area that afternoon. Services for the second day of Rosh Hashanah are on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 9 am. To purchase tickets and for more details, contact the CBI office.

Yom Kippur begins Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 pm with the solemn and beautiful Kol Nidre service. Yom Kippur Day on Wednesday, Oct. 5 will once again be an interesting and meaningful service beginning at 9 am, with a Yizkor service held around lunchtime. There will be a study session in the afternoon as well as another fun and interactive family service for families with kids or grandchildren. Services will continue into the evening culminating with the moving blowing of the Shofar.

For more information and to purchase tickets for the High Holidays at CBI, visit, email, or call the CBI main office 732-842-1800. The programs in the CBI Sanctuary will also be livestreamed on the CBI Facebook page (@CBIRumson). Like the Facebook page to get event and service reminders and information.
