Two Long Branch men have been charged with aggravated assault after injuring a police officer during a foot chase, according to Ocean Township police.

The two young men, Hassan J. Foster, 24, and Kaylib J. Paul, 20, were driving on Sunday, Jan. 17 around midnight when they were pulled over by police. During this routine stop on Route 35 in the area of Sunset Avenue, police learned that the driver, Foster, did not have a valid registration or insurance.

Additional officers arrived on scene to assist because the pair began running from the scene. The police pursued them after they discovered a 9mm firearm.

Amid the pursuit, Patrolman Arthur Barnek sustained a serious head injury.  The cause of the injury itself was not released. He was treated at Jersey Shore Medical Hospital. He was listed as in stable condition.

After further investigation of the vehicle, 50 grams of marijuana was found, along with a loaded firearm. There was also a prescription bottle labeled “Promethazine Hydrochloride” that belonged to someone else.

Both men were charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a defaced firearm, possession of a large capacity magazine, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, resisting arrest, aggravated assault of a police officer, and a number of motor vehicle offenses, according to Sgt. Matthew Jackiewicz with the Ocean Township Police Department.
