Treat Yourself to a Guilty Pleasure

Even though Scott Elk, lead singer for local cover band Guilty Pleasure, has performed with the Goo Goo Dolls and other famous musicians, and appeared on the dating-based TV game show Take Me Out, he still enjoys playing his music close to home.

“Monmouth County has one of the best music scenes in the country,” he said. “I have a few favorite venues: playing acoustic guitar at Teak in Red Bank, piano at Nauvoo Grill Club in Fair Haven, and full band at Huddy’s Inn in Colts Neck.”

When Elk formed Guilty Pleasure several years ago, he looked for band members to complement the big personality he brings to the stage, and his penchant for encouraging the audience to interact with him.

He found “a wonderful spark” in second lead singer Christina Roche, who joined the band two years ago. While she lists singing on cruise ships and on national tours on her musical resume, Roche currently enjoys her most demanding role yet: She is a new mom.

For the band’s guitar combo, Elk tapped two young men from Monmouth County, who met and became roommates while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. Kyle Ward and Louis D’Alotto have been playing guitar since grade school. Ward also plays drums and bass, and is a writer and producer. In addition to the guitar, D’Alotto is a music arranger and accomplished instructor.

Providing the groove on bass guitar is Mike O’Hara, who “coordinates perfectly with seasoned drummer Mike Sakowski,” Elk said. O’Hara draws his musical influences from Southern and classic rock, and has played guitar and bass in cover bands since college. Sakowski, a respected drum teacher, has played with the Moroccan Sheepherders and is a member of heavy metal band Dark Sky Choir.

Guilty Pleasure plays dance music, classic and contemporary rock, pop, and soul, representing every decade from the 1960s right through to today. The band performs up and down the Jersey Shore and beyond at music venues, festivals, corporate events, private parties, and charitable events. Recent gigs include the Light of Day WinterFest, Sandy Hook Concert Series, and the Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival.

“We bring the fun and the party,” Elk said. “We win new fans easily, while old friends enjoy our shows again and again.”
