Christopher Defeis Toms River House Fire

Earlier today, we posted an article about a house fire in Toms River, New Jersey that killed two cats. This is the rest of the story.

The Toms River fire department responded to the scene to conduct fire suppression. Once at the scene, firefighters attempted a search and rescue operation of the residence believing there were occupants in the home. After determining that no one was trapped inside, one of the residents was found sleeping in a car in the driveway.

Christopher Defeis, 45, was found in the driveway and was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated arson, simple assault, and injury to a firefighter.

The Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Task Force, Toms River Police Department Detective Bureau, Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s K-9 Unit and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined that the fire had multiple points of origin and was ignited by a person or persons using an open flame to an ignitable liquid.

The investigation revealed that Defeis and his wife had attended a party at a family members residence earlier that evening. Police said that Defeis got into an argument with his wife and assaulted her. Defeis then left the family members’ residence and returned home. The investigation further revealed that he allegedly poured gasoline throughout the kitchen, dining room and family room areas of the residence. He then ignited the gasoline and exited the residence returning to the vehicle parked in the driveway.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty. Information courtesy of Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
