Thompson Softball Posts Undefeated Season

By Les Pierce

The Thompson Middle School girls’ softball team completed their season with a 13-0 record. Over the course of the schedule, the Lions outscored opponents 150-20.

The perfect season was in serious jeopardy in the fourth game of the campaign, a home contest versus Matawan. Thompson was shut out through the first five innings and trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. At this point, the Lions deadlocked the score at 2-2 when Lia Simoniello hit a line drive down the left field line to bring across Kylie Fuerbacher and Hope Mullane, who had started the rally with back-to-back singles.

Neither squad scored in the seventh stanza, sending the game into extra innings. Matawan applied pressure, scoring a run in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the eighth, catcher Jenna Barnes led off with a double. Bella Lanzalotto then reached first on a walk and Hope Mullane hit a two-run double to left center field to clinch the win with a 4-3 final score.

Lia Simoniello paced the Lions on offense with a .613 average and 19 hits. Following in the hitting stats were Renee Lioudakis (.600 – 23 hits), Hope Mullane (.594 -19 hits), and Lindsay Belz (.575 – 23 hits). Belz led the team in home runs with three. Simoniello led in triples with five and Lioudakis in doubles with eight. Ace hurler Hope Mullane started all 13 games. She pitched a total of 75 innings, posted five shutouts, and struck out 117 batters while allowing only 20 runs. Arguably her best performance came in a mercy-shortened six-inning game against Ocean Township. There, she fanned 14 of the 18 batters faced for a 17-0 victory.

The Lions were guided by coaches Matthew Krol and Michael Oxley. Coach Krol stated of the squad, “This is one of the most complete teams, from top to bottom, that Coach Oxley and I have had the privilege of coaching. They are smart, disciplined, and unselfish. We look forward to watching their continued success at Middletown South.”
