Thompson Boys’ Soccer Team Completes Undefeated Season

By Les Pierce

The Thompson boys’ soccer team finished the 2021 campaign with a blemish-free 10-0 record and captured Middle School Shore Conference Championship. It was the second time the Lions posted an undefeated season in the past three years.

Luke Strada led the offense with 13 goals, followed by Mason Petke (11 goals) and Niko Vrban (eight goals). A defense that produced five shutouts was sparked by Jack Cohen, Brett Denery, Matteo Gallina and Ryan Kapler. Goalie Carson Perry allowed just six goals over the 10-game schedule. The midfield was well controlled by Joey Fielding, Joey Velardi and Gian Luca Zito.

Thompson’s perfect season was in jeopardy in a game against Ocean Township. It was a late-season battle, pitting two undefeated units. Ocean established a 2-0 lead in the first half, and according to Thompson Head Coach Brittany Williams, her players appeared deflated at the halftime break. Williams sought to uplift the squad stating, “2-0 is the most dangerous score. They think they have it in the bag, but they do not. You need to come out and give the fight of your life and show everyone out here you want this the most.”

The Thompson boys responded with two quick goals by Vrban and then Strada to deadlock the tally. Strada fired in the winning goal with less than three minutes in regulation for the 3-2 victory.

“This was one of the most exciting games of my career,” Williams said. “Their ability to rally around each other, stay positive in light of being down and fight to win against their greatest opponent was a very special moment I will truly never forget. Congrats to this team for an undefeated season and being named the Middle School Shore Conference Champions. This team has a tremendous amount of heart for the game, and I will miss their energy!”

Coach Williams has posted a of 37-3 record over her four years at the helm.
