Shrewsbury Gardeners Celebrate Season with Community Picnic

By Lori Draz

For the past 10 years, green thumbs from Shrewsbury have come together at the Shrewsbury Municipal Complex to grow and share at the Shrewsbury Community Garden. Now with fall fully underway, they closed the garden with a big season-ending picnic, held on Oct. 9.

Gardeners and invited guests enjoyed a festive afternoon in the beautiful sunshine while dining on a vast assortment of food, many made with the vegetables they had grown over this past summer.ย

The Shrewsbury Community Garden has been a solid success since it began. Each year, there is a waiting list to secure one of the 80 available plots where gardens grow flowers and a big selection of vegetables. The garden is popular because the gardeners work together, making friends and sharing tips throughout growing season. Its design includes a high fence that makes the garden area impenetrable to hungry deer, groundhogs and skunks. Some plots are cared for by the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Monmouth County whose sole objective is to raise organic vegetables for distribution to the food bank in Red Bank. Members also offer a mentoring program to educate, support and advise new gardeners on planting techniques to ideas for enhancing soil.

Plot reservations go quickly, so check for announcements and updates on the 2023 season.ย
