Shrewsbury Borough School Celebrates Dr. Seuss

By Lori Draz

Each year, Shrewsbury Borough School suspends a portion of its daily classes to allow students to engage in four Enrichment Days. The students, teachers, and outside volunteers work to create a school-wide project, which they display at the school’s enrichment fair when the finished works of every student, from pre-K through eighth grade, are shared with each other, plus the general public.

That magical day this year was February 22, as the school transformed into “A Seuss-errific Experience!” Each class chose a different Dr. Seuss book as their theme, and it was all colorfully and cleverly represented. Horton, Ooblek, the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two, Star-Bellied Sneeches, and all your favorites filled the halls and auditorium. As part of the preparations, Mayor Don Burden and some of the Shrewsbury Homesteaders Seniors shared time with the sixth graders, who chose Dr. Seuss’ “You’re Only Old Once” as their theme. The adults shared the trends in fashion, music, and dance from the 1940s through the 1970s, and the students made interesting collages of each decade in their display, entitled “Forever Young,” which even included video clips of the dancing seniors’ trip to school.

It was hard to leave this magical place, but like the good Dr. Seuss always does, he gave everyone a memory to hold onto.
