A Sayreville Middle School teacher, and high school wrestling and football coach, was arrested Saturday on charges of sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

According to NJ.com, John Denuto, 43, of Spotswood, is being charged for an October 2016 incident involving a teenager who was between the ages of 13 and 15 years old. The charges include sexual assault of a minor, as well as possession of childย  pornography and other endangering charges. It has not been reported how the two knew each other, or whether the teenager was a student of his.

Denuto was immediately terminated from his current coaching position of the wrestling program at Union County College. He had previously held numerous coaching roles in both wrestling and football across 15 schools in New Jersey, including a number of schools in our area. It has been reported that during his coaching career, he assisted in wrestling clinics at Raritan High School in 2011, and was an assistant wrestling coach at Saint John Vianney High School. Denuto also served as assistant football coach at Middletown North High School and Ocean Township.

Sources say Denuto was suspended with pay from his current middle school position where he was a special education math teacher.

In a statement sent to NJ Advance Media, Sayreville superintendent Dr. Richard Labbe stated, โ€œSince the safety and well-being of our students is and has always been our highest priority, we are shocked and deeply troubled by what has occurred and are currently cooperating fully with the law enforcement.”

Denuto is being held at Middlesex County Corrections Facility in New Brunswick.

Anyone with information pertaining to this case is asked to call Sergeant Daniel Ellmeyer of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Julissa Alvarado at the Middlesex County Prosecutorโ€™s Office at 732-745-3711.
