Rumson Man Missing Since Sunday

The United States Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police and the Rumson Police Department are investigating a missing person from a vessel in the Sandy Hook Bay.

As reported by his family, on Sunday, May 1, Richard O’Day of Rumson, NJ went missing between the hours of 10 am and 10 pm. His 27′ Grady White Freedom boat was found anchored in either Spermaceti or Horseshoe Cover with no occupant. His wallet and phone were still on the boat.

The boat left a private dock on Polly’s Pond that morning. Richard is 6 feet tall and weighs about 180 lbs. He has brown/gray hair. The family is unsure of what he was wearing.

Richard spent his life on the water surfing and on boats. The family asks if you are walking along the shoreline on Sandy Hook to please be alert. If the pubic has any video on the Shrewsbury River from Polly’s Pond to either of the coves on Sunday, they ask that you please review it to see if you notice the Grady White Freedom boat and any occupants. This area includes homes in Rumson, Sea Brighty, Highlands, and possibly Atlantic Highlands. If you were on the water and recall seeing the boat that would be important information as well.

If you have any information pertaining to this investigation please contact New Jersey State Police Detective Hannan at 609-584-5000 x5289, United States Coast Guard at 718-354-4120 or Detective Schneider of the Rumson Police Department at 732-842-0500.
