Rumson FC 2014 U8 Girls Win Costume Contest and Their First Game

By Shanna O’Mara

The Rumson Futbol Club U8 division consists of two teams of 6- and 7-year-olds from Rumson and Fair Haven. This fall, the Under Dawgs got off to a slow start to the season but quickly bounced back following two wins in one day: a victory over Hazlet opponents and a first-place prize in a Halloween costume contest.

The girls participated in the 21st annual Freehold FrightFest Soccer Tournament this past October and came away with more than tricks and treats. The players won first place in the costume contest among 30 other teams for their “Alice in Wonderland”-themed entry. They also snatched a victory over the Hazlet United Dash by a 2-0 tally.

“The season turned around that day, perhaps fueled by the excitement of the costume and pumpkin contests,” said Coach Scott Feminello, who leads the team with Joe Bowley. “The Under Dawgs started the year slow, playing against more experienced teams from large towns, and after this tournament, [they were] looking toward to where they wanted to be rather than where they had been. It only took some guidance from the Cheshire Cat, telling the team it is all about where you want to get to, with hours of practice mixed in.”

Kennedy Romanczuk scored off an assist from Ryan O’Hagen in the second half. Pauline Feminello then scored the winning goal from fairly deep in the defensive zone, off an assist from Audrey Bowley. Goalkeeper Georgia Schirick recorded the shutout.

“They truly played as a team with notable play from Maddie Murphy, Grace Bovo, Isla Chin, Lucy Scholl, Olivia Rudolph and Vivienne Zerillo,” Coach Feminello said. “The play of Madaline Warwicker, a key contributor all year, was sorely missed that day.”

The Rumson Futbol Club U8 division was formed this past summer after enthusiasm grew during spring 2021 tryouts. Players participate throughout the summer and fall, and work with Team Trainer Alberto Morello from FC Monmouth. For more information on how to get involved this spring, visit
