RCDS Eighth Graders Host 50th Annual Event

Ellie Frankel inhaled the sweet combination of cotton candy and fresh-cut grass. She wiped her fingers, stained with face paint, onto her shorts as her next customer plopped down with a grin, ready for a masterpiece to be painted on her cheek.

All around her, hundreds of students and their families bustled about The Rumson Country Day School campus to enjoy games, food, music and more at the Annual Eighth Grade Carnival.

This year marked the carnival’s 50th anniversary, and this year Ellie experienced it as an eighth-grade leader in the Class of 2019. The carnival is a rite of passage that encourages RCDS eighth graders to be role models for the rest of the school. Each eighth grader helps manage the carnival logistics, and conceptualize and operate the activity booths.

Rumson Country Day School Eighth Grade CarnivalThis year’s carnival featured face painting and hair dye stations, plus games that ranged from the traditional ring toss to the newer pool noodle shoot. Students, families and faculty caught up over hot dogs and hamburgers, and indulged in a variety of sweets.

Ellie teamed up at the face painting booth with Emma Devine, a seventh grader.

“Today’s event is all about being a family,” Ellie said. “It’s great because the whole school can come together and have fun in one place. I love spending time with the younger kids, and working with Emma gave us a chance to become closer. It’s really a bonding experience.”

The annual carnival raises funds for a class gift presented by the graduating class to recognize the school and leave behind a little piece of their class legacy. Past class gifts have included filtered ezH2O bottle filling stations, dining room tableware, and an outdoor classroom space.

“It’s good to give back to the school that has given us so much,” Emma said. “I’m looking forward to leading the fundraiser next year.”

Other RCDS events include the Annual Holiday Concert, Arts Festival and renowned Rummage Sale. Rumson Country Day School Eighth Grade Carnival 2Rumson Country Day School Eighth Grade Carnival 2
