Red Bank to Celebrate Juneteenth with Variety of Events

On Saturday, June 19, the community of Red Bank will celebrate Juneteenth. The celebration commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.

The Red Bank celebration will begin at 9 am with a Vaccination Day for youth and families. Pre-registration is required. The Pfizer vaccine will be available for those 12 years of age and older. To register for an appointment, text your full name, date of birth and phone number to 848-260-9076, or call the Parker Family Health Center at 732-212-0777.

At noon, the community is invited to join a Solidarity March that will begin at Pilgrim Baptist Church at 172 Shrewsbury Ave. The march will conclude at the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center where there will be a cultural awareness event.

The day will culminate at the Johnny Jazz Park with a celebration that will include presentations, musical entertainment, vendors and much more. The Juneteenth Day celebration is being sponsored by the Red Bank Recreation Department, Pilgrim Baptist Church, T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center and Parker Family Health Center.
