Red Bank Catholic Girls’ Soccer Squad Claims Second Consecutive State Sectional Title

Back on Sept. 18, the Red Bank Catholic girls’ soccer team lost to Saint John Vianney by a 2-1 tally in a grueling double-overtime affair. A rematch was set up when both clubs fought through the brackets to reach the final of the NJSIAA Non-Public A South tournament.

SJV had utilized a smothering strategy to produce five consecutive shutouts leading up to the game. They continued that style of play with a stifling defense that took control of the first half.

Lancer freshman Milani Thompson scored early, at just 11:05 into the contest. The 1-0 tally held up to the halftime break; the mettle of the Casey squad was being severely tested.

RBC emerged from the huddle with renewed energy and reversed the momentum in the second half. The squad was buoyed when Mya King scored with 20:53 remaining, on a pass from Morgan Cupo, which tied the game at 1-1. It was the sophomore’s 16th goal of the season.

The winning goal came with 12:03 on the clock. Junior Devyn Drusjack got a shot off on a breakaway that was repulsed. However, she got a second shot on the rebound and lofted the ball into the net from just inside the 20-yard line for a 2-1 tally that held up as a final score. It was Drusjack’s third goal of the season and undoubtedly her most memorable. Senior goalie Cleo Grignard anchored the defense with seven saves.

This was RBC’s second consecutive Sectional title. Last year, they captured the NJSIAA Central East G championship via a 4-1 victory over this same Saint John Vianney unit.
