Red Bank Catholic Field Hockey Needs to Fill Gap

By Les Pierce

There are shoes to fill on the Red Bank Catholic field hockey squad. Graduating seniors Julianne Kopec (Temple University) and Gabriella Goehring (Sacred Heart University) accounted for 47 of the Caseys’ 54 goals last season. A huge gap exists offensively going into the 2021 campaign.

Second-year Head Coach Niki Ikeda will be counting on forward Amelia “Mimi” Drechsler to fill a good portion of that gap. The junior landed a spot on the varsity squad as a freshman and brings valuable experience to the frontline in her third year on the field.

RBC will be counting on stability in their defense. Goalie Bella Hurta started as a freshman and posted 74 saves in 2019 and 112 in 2020. “We are so fortunate to have Bella return in the cage,” Ikeda said. “She is a pivotal part of our defensive unit, and we will look to her for her experience and continued effort this season.”

Fortunately, there is another Kopec on the roster. Ellie Kopec was a starter last season as a freshman and possesses the ability to play at both midfield and the backline.

A key game this season will be a clash with Middletown South scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7 at Count Basie Field. “Middletown South is always a competitive game,” said Ikeda. “They beat us last year for the first time since 2016, but the games are always very close. They have a fantastic coach and had a very successful season last year, so we are excited to compete against them again this season.”

She added, “We are really looking forward to this upcoming season. We graduated four seniors, all of whom were starters, so we are definitely looking for girls to fill those roles this season. We are excited to see the growth of our younger players and to build on our previous successes.”
