For Red Bank Catholic’s Cate DeSousa, the Monmouth County Cross Country Championship meet was like a walk in the park. The Casey senior separated herself from the field early and cruised to an easy win, timed at 18:36.47 over the Holmdel Park course on Oct. 11.
Finishing second at 18:53.67 was Freehold Township’s Emma Zawatski, last spring’s 1,600-meter state champion. Tilly O’Connor (19:18.44) of St. Rose, the reigning NJSIAA Non-Public B cross country champion, finished third.
Two weeks earlier, DeSousa tested herself against some of the best nationwide, competing in the Ocean State Invitational held at Goodard Memorial Park in Warwick, Rhode Island on Sept. 24. Here, she placed third to Cornwall Central’s Karrie Baloga, who is currently ranked No. 4 nationally by Dyestat.com.
“This is a super competitive county with so many great runners,” Cate said. “It’s so exciting to win.”
DeSousa will continue her athletic endeavors at the University of Virginia next fall.
