October at the Oceanic Free Library

By Lori Draz

The Oceanic Free Library (OFL) says it’s time for a good ghost story, some fall fun, a new recipe and some autumn-inspired crafts at this fun and friendly historic library, voted “Most Loved Library 2022” by Hulafrog for the fourth year in a row.

The adult Friday Knitters Group continues to meet every week at 2 pm. All levels of knitters and crocheters are welcome.

The Women’s Book Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at 1:30 pm. All are welcome, even gentlemen. Call the library if you need a large print or CD/audio version instead of the traditional print copy. Registration is not necessary. You can also call the library for information on the newly formed Men’s Book Club.

The Two River Bridge Club now meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 pm for a lesson, and 6:45 pm for play. Next sessions are Nov. 2 and Dec. 7.

Have you always wanted to catch a ghost? Well Friday, Oct. 21 might just be your lucky night. From 7 to 11 pm, you can be a part of the Public Paranormal Investigation of the Oceanic Free Library. Local historian and paranormal investigator Greg Caggiano and the crew of “Ghosts on the Coast” will try to find out if any spirits inhabit the 100-year-old building after hours! The evening will begin with a brief presentation on ghost hunting techniques and methods followed by a hands-on investigation. Reservations are limited to 15 people, and this will fill fast. Tickets are $40 per person. Please note there is no guarantee paranormal activity will be experienced, but it will be fun to see.

Miss Molly has more of those at-home fun, “take and make” craft kits, available at the front desk on the 1st and 15th of every month. Each personally assembled kits bag contains all the pieces you’ll need to make a fun craft at home and a link for virtual storytime and instructions. First come, first served – one bag per child.

Miss Molly invites you to Baby and Toddler Storytime, on Tuesdays 10:15 to 10:35 am or 11:15 to 11:35 am. There’s also a Special Program on Nov. 22 at 11:15 am called “Coastal Melodies.” Preschool and Family Storytime is held 2 to 2:20 pm on Tuesdays. Registration is mandatory for every StoryTime session. Drop-ins will not be admitted as session size is limited to 10 children per session. Masks are recommended but not mandatory for children over 2. All unvaccinated accompanying adults must wear masks.

Each Tuesday, from 3:45 to 4:30 pm, the library hosts some super fun Awesome Activities. Registration is required for many of these events so plan ahead.

  • Oct. 18 – Make a pumpkin bear friend!
  • Oct. 25 – Listen to a spooky story and then make your own slime!
  • Nov. 1 – Meet a real K9 officer and working police dog, and see a demonstration of how these highly trained dogs work to keep us safe.
  • Nov. 8 – Read to the dogs
  • Nov. 15 – Special Program: Fairy tale story teller
  • Nov. 22 – Special Program Snapology!
  • Nov. 29 – Story and a dog craft

As always, each month also features the works of local artists who display and make available for sale a vast array of art. There’s always some new and unique, and 20 percent of sales goes directly to support the library. This month, see and shop the lovely creations of Lily May Pottery. Joining her, get into the holiday spirit with Unique Creations by Triple C. Zach Wilson returns with his pottery and mugs, and joining him will be the gorgeous jewelry of Victoria Ruta Designs.

The library is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.

The OFL will be closed Friday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. On Wednesday, Nov. 23, the library will close at 1 pm and remain closed Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after Thanksgiving Day.
