New Details Released in Middlesex County Backyard Drowning

New information is coming to light about last week’s tragedy wherein three family members died in the Middlesex County backyard.

The three victims who did not know how to swim tragically drowned last Monday afternoon at their newly purchased East Brunswick home.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutorโ€™s Office, 33-year-old Nisha Patel, her 62-year-old father-in-law, Bharat Patel, and her 8-year-old daughter were all pronounced dead at the scene after officers arrived and tried to perform CPR on the victims. A neighbor who heard screaming coming from the backyard had called the police just after 4 pm.

Police have now said the two adults were trying to rescue the 8-year-old who fell into the pool and couldn’t get out. They tried to save her, but could not swim or make it out safely, according to East Brunswick Lt. Frank Sutter.

Public records show the house was purchased on May 1. The pool was mostly shallow with a deeper 7-foot section. According to neighbors, it was recently opened by a pool company and the family was excited to use it this summer.

Authorities initially began investigating a possible electrocution, but that theory was ruled out last Tuesday.
