Must-Have Skincare Products to Combat the Harsh Elements of Winter

By Julia Mortimer

With the endless hand sanitizing that we do on a daily basis, our hands are screaming for help. Not only do our hands suffer from dryness, but wearing masks everyday also makes your skin freak out a bit. If you have fallen victim to “maskne,” like me, you may be over-exfoliating, which is why it’s important to keep your skin moisturized and your skin barrier intact!

When you are strolling through your favorite beauty shop or browsing online, these are a few products that have made it to my top shelf when my skin needs a little extra TLC. If you don’t fancy some of these products, that’s OK because I’m also going to highlight the powerhouse ingredients that you could look for in other products to help your dry skin.

Beginning with hand cream, there are a lot that can make you never pick one up again – things like greasiness, scent or just not quenching your dry skin’s thirst. Here are two I love.

Weleda Skin Food

Weleda Skin Food is a tried and true product used by celebrity makeup artists and millions each day. Sold at Target and Amazon, the rich cream is packed with sunflower seed oil, almond oil, beeswax and glycerin. If you have ultra-dry hands or eczema, this will be your best friend.

Dreamist Hand Cream

This hand cream is for my friends who also fall in love with beautiful branding and packaging. Necessaire has a sustainable body care brand, which recently released the Dreamist Hand Cream. Ingredients include glycerin, niacinamide, Marula oil and peptides – all meant to nourish your damaged skin! This one is old at Sephora and Nordstrom.

Face masks are the perfect “treat yourself” purchase for the end of a stressful week or the start of a relaxing night. Here are two your skin will thank you for.

My Butter Mask

For those who suffer from dry skin in the winter, this mask is like a warm hug for your skin. The My Topicals My Butter mask is meant to “strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier, soothe irritation and inflammation, and smooth dry, textured skin. It’s creamy without feeling greasy or heavy, and works great for flare-ups on other areas of the body as well!” The nurturing ingredients include turmeric, colloidal oatmeal, green tea extract and ginseng root. This product is only sold online.

Night Shift Face Mask

Another brand that made big waves in 2020 is Loops hydrogel one-use face masks. They come in a pack of five, and for dehydrated skin, Night Shift is the way to go. This one is perfect for a night in when you want to give your face that little extra TLC before bed. It’s packed with collagen, herb extracts, cactus extract and allantoin.

There is nothing quite like taking a steaming hot shower after being outside in the cold, but hot water dehydrates your skin, so it’s important to have great body lotions on deck.

Lipikar Balm

La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm has been a staple of mine this winter. I put it on damp skin as skin absorbs the product more effectively when moist. Let the Shea butter, glycerin and niacinamide do their job on your skin. This brand is sold at Ulta and most major drug stores.

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

Recommended by countless dermatologists, CeraVe moisturizing cream has never failed me. No frills – this is just a trusted and solid brand! Treat your skin to ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

Sensual Touch Oil

The final body product is the Sensual Touch Oil from Best of Nature, with a variety of nourishing ingredients to leave your skin happy and supple. This product is sold on Amazon, and I’ve also seen it at Shoprite!
