Monmouth County Historical Organizations to Commemorate Juneteenth

On Saturday, June 25, in honor of Juneteenth, the Monmouth County Historical Association in cooperation with the New Jersey Historical Commission will host an event featuring “Beneath the Floorboards,” an exhibition telling the stories of the enslaved African Americans who once resided at Marlpit Hall. Curator-led tours of the exhibit, a panel of speakers and cultural programming will expand on the exhibition’s narrative, exploring the lives and experiences of enslaved people in Monmouth County and New Jersey. Light refreshments will be provided at the historic Taylor Butler house next door. 

The speaker program will begin at noon, but attendees are welcome to participate in tours of the exhibition throughout the day. Curator-led tours will leave on the hour at 2, 3 and 4 pm, with self-guided tours available throughout the day. 

Marlpit Hall and Taylor Butler Houses are located on Kings Hwy. in Middletown. Free, limited parking is available on site, or you can use the NJ Transit Middletown which is a half mile from Marlpit Hall. For information and registration, visit MonmouthHistory.org.
