Middletown United Methodist Church Sponsors Teen Service Group

A group of Bayshore teens are busy helping others in their community.  Service was the key motivation for the high school and middle school students. Middletown United Methodist Church (MUMC) sponsors the Teen Service Group, but all ninth through 12th graders are invited to join in their work activities.

The leaders meet every other Wednesday at 7:15 pm in the MUMC, 924 Middletown-Lincroft Rd. This is when past projects are reviewed, and efforts are made to choose one or two new ones for the month.

When an event has been scheduled, an email is sent out to all members of the group and all middle and high schoolers in the church. Everyone is encouraged to bring other youths who want to help and gain service hours while working next to old and new friends.

Rev. Dr. Derrick Doherty, pastor of the church, noted, “The teens are completely in charge of identifying areas and organizations that might need their help. Now that they have been completing projects regularly, the word is spreading, and the teens are excited to expand their commitment to help where they find a need.”

Currently, the teens have helped Family Promise by providing more than 150 meals. The meals are shared with Family Promise clients who were given temporary housing after finding themselves in unsecure housing situations.

Flower planting was done by some of the teens, and other young people have helped with Goodness Now, a free food pantry run by the church members. The next event being planned by the Teen Service Group is a beach clean-up. The teens will carpool together from the church and have adult accompaniment.

Any middle or high schooler who would like more information or would like to be included on the emails is asked to call the church at 732-671-0707 or visit MiddletownUMCNJ.org for more information.
