It has been a banner year for the Middletown South girls’ cross country team. South then went on to upset Colts Neck to capture the Shore Conference championship.

Middletown has now claimed the North Jersey Group 3 NJSIAA State Sectional championship in a meet held at Greystone-Central Park in Morris Plains. South’s winning low score of 35 points easily bested second place Red Bank (98).  Completing the top five squads were Summit (101), Mendham (114) and Millburn (152).

The Eagles were paced by senior Madison Brand, who finished second overall to Alexa Wesley of Warren Hills. Scoring for the Eagles were Kathleen Shay (fourth), Michelle Coyotl (eighth), Danielle Smith (ninth), and Ryanne Mulligan (13th).

Middletown closed their season placing fourth in the state overall at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. Head coach Bill Clifton stated of the squad, “This may have been the most consistent team we have ever had here at High School South. There was never an off day or bad race. Every time they toed the start line, the end result was a powerful performance.”
