The Middletown South field hockey team completed its regular season schedule with a perfect 12-0 record. The Eagles also captured the A-North Division title for the third consecutive year and outscored opponents by a lopsided 68-2 throughout the 2020 campaign.

Senior forward Lia Simoniello led the squad in scoring with 17 goals and 14 assists. Gianna Racioppi (11 goals, 12 assists), Madison Cigolini (11 goals, eight assists) and Kayla Freibott (11 goals, 15 assists) also contributed significantly to the offense.

“Lia Simoniello led the A-North Division in goals scored and total points,” stated Head Coach Jordan Hickman. “She ended her junior season with the same accolade and was awarded Division Offensive MVP. Lia is fast, tough and aggressive in front of the cage. She gives nothing but 100 percent every time she steps on to the field.”

Hickman also commented on defensive standout Peyton Kenney.

Junior Peyton Kenney (right) anchored the Eagle defense.

“Peyton should get some kind of recognition,” she said. “Defenders are so much harder to put into the spotlight because they don’t accumulate stats, but she is a stud. She is an eyes-up player who always has the next play in her mind. She is vocal and a true leader. On the field, she is patient and poised. She is fun to watch! She really is the glue that holds together my team on the field. The ball rarely gets past the 50-yard line largely thanks to her. She is a junior and already getting looked at by Division I schools for both lacrosse and field hockey.”

In 2019, South claimed the NJSIAA North 2 Group 3 State Sectional Championship.
