Middletown South Field Hockey Depending on a Youth Movement

By Les Pierce

Junior midfielder Makenna Blozen

Last year, the Middletown High School South field hockey team went undefeated at 12-0 in division play and captured their fourth consecutive A-North title. However, graduation took a toll, as only six players are returning from that squad. This may be a difficult rebuilding year for the Eagles.

Expected to lead South on offense are Makenna Blozen (Jr. M), Caroline Bedetti (So. F) and Sophia Quintano (Jr. M). Blozen and Bedetti put up seven goals each last season.

The graduation of Peyton Kenney, the 2021 Shore Coaches A – North Player of the Year recipient, creates a huge hole in the defense. Expected to fill that hole are Ava Applegate (Sr. D), Alexis Schactman (Jr. D) and Sabrina Kirk (Jr. M/D). Β

Blozen and Kirk were both selected to the Shore Coaches A-North All Division squad last year.

Fortunately, goalie Leila Black will be returning to protect the cage. The senior boasts 95 career saves and should reach the 100-save milestone early in the campaign. She has been named as a team captain.

Seventh-year Head Coach Jordan Hickman disclosed that the squad will be staffed with many inexperienced sophomores and juniors. Historically, young players develop quickly in this program, so the Eagles may indeed resume their winning ways with the new personnel. Β

β€œI think we have the ability to win the division and advance if we can grow together as a unit early on and some of the young players step into leadership roles,” Hickman said.
