The Middletown High School South freshman boys’ cross country team started the season with championship victories in three meets: the Stewart Invitational, Thompson Park Class Meet, and New Balance Shore Coaches Invitational. The Eagles have kept the streak going, besting perennial champ Christian Brothers Academy to claim the Monmouth County Freshman Championship in a meet held at Holmdel Park. South took top honors with a low score of 25 points, with CBA in second place at 45 points.  Completing the top five were Holmdel (78), St. Rose (125), and Marlboro High School (148).

Middletown’s Jack Hutson and CBA’s Chase Cauvin dueled stride-for-stride in lockstep for 200 yards in the stretch run.   Hutson then pulled away in the last 15 yards to win the individual championship by just a second, with a clocking of 11:22.

South achieved the coup by placing all five of their scoring runners in the first nine positions of the 89-man field. Scoring for the Eagles were Sean Fitzpatrick (fourth), Lang Daly (fifth), Ty Hashemi (sixth), and Nick Piscopo (ninth). CBA placed two additional runners in the top 10: Chris DeSousa (seventh) and Liam Miksic (eighth).

Head coach Vic Bayers, Jr. said of the squad, “The frosh team works well together and is happy for whichever team member leads the team at each race. What is most important to them is the success of the team.” Commenting on newly crowned Monmouth County champion Jack Hutson, he stated, “Jack is the quiet work horse of the team. Nothing really rattles him and he looks forward to working hard each and every day.”
