Middletown South 2021 Baseball State Championship Team Honored

By Les Pierce

Players and coaches display their championship rings.

Last spring, the Middletown High School South baseball team made history by winning the NJSIAA Group 4 championship. It was the Eagles first group title in 25 years and the second ever in the program’s history.

An on-field celebration ensued immediately following the last pitch of the championship final. However, it took months for a formal ceremony to be held.

A proper observance was delayed several times due to COVID-19 issues and the difficulty of identifying dates that would accommodate graduated seniors returning to the area. Finally, a ceremonial function hosted by the Middletown High School South Diamond Club was held on March 25 in the school’s cafeteria.

Diamond Club President Ila Wood served as the Master of Ceremonies. She presented Head Coach Chris LeMore with a plaque commemorating the championship. The plaque featured a laminated news article that documented the championship win.

Coach LeMore recounted the 2021 season and the spirit of the team, as it overcame challenges along the way to succeed. He then presented each player with a championship ring, accompanied by an anecdotal comment about each individual. The rings were provided by the Diamond Club.

“The day has finally arrived, and the Diamond Club is thrilled to present our Middletown South Eagles baseball players, coaches and administrators with their 2021 State Championship rings,” Wood said. “The Eagles’ unparalleled dedication and sportsmanship throughout the season made their teammates, their families, their school and the whole Middletown community so proud, and tonight we celebrate their great accomplishment!”

LeMore continued, “Last season was a magical one. The boys played excellent baseball together and continued to fight until the very last out recorded on June 19, 2021. These boys worked extremely hard from wire to wire. The thing that stuck out the most for me about last year was the passion that was displayed every day and the camaraderie that was developed throughout the season. As the season wore on, the boys’ strength within the dugout got stronger and stronger, leading them to believe in each other more and more. That is thing that I am most proud of as the head coach at Middletown South is that our program continues to come along each day strengthening our belief in the ‘brothers of baseball.’ Each day that I look back at last year’s season, I continue to cherish the relationships that I have created within our program and the never ending bond that our boys will have for the rest of their lives being the 2021 Group IV State Champions. My goal is that one day, they look back on their time at Middletown South and appreciate the work that they put in daily and the amount of attention that was paid to them so that they could go out and be the best that they could be each day throughout the season!”

ShopRite of Middletown donated cake for the 80 people in attendance while decorations for the celebration came from Party Fair in town. ACME of Lincroft provided waters, paper plates, coffee and creamers.

Diamond Club VP Sue Cacoilo said, “Their combined generosity shows these young men that not only are friends and family proud of their achievement, but so is the entire community that surrounds them. That should make them feel proud.”
