A Middletown Township Police Sergeant was arrested in New York on a slew of charges that stemmed from drinking and driving.

Carl F. Roth, 49, of Leonardo was arrested at 11:15 p.m. on July 17, when New York State Police responded to a two-vehicle accident at 9:11 p.m. at the intersection of Route 23 and County Route 17. Roth was driving a 2011 white Mercedes Benz when he struck the motorcyclist, breaking his leg and leaving him in a ditch before driving off. Roth was caught when state police located his license plate in the road.

Roth was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, leaving a serious injury accident, driving while intoxicated, refusing to take a breathalyzer test, moving from a lane unsafely and failure to stop at a stop sign.

The sergeant who has worked for the MTPD since 1999 has been suspended without pay.
