Middletown High School North and South Announce Commencement Dates

Weeks after students from Middletown High School North and South protested to have in-person commencement ceremonies, it seems their wish has been granted.

According to letters sent out to parents, Middletown North and South will hold in-person ceremonies on Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9. The rain date will be Friday, July 10. Each program will include approximately 135 graduates, in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines, and they will be organized alphabetically.

The events will be held at 8:30 and 11 am on Wednesday and at 8:30 am on Thursday, according to MHSS Principal Matthew Kirkpatrick. Two guests per family are permitted to attend the ceremony.

On June 1, dozens of students rallied in front of the Board of Education building, demanding to be allowed to walk during commencement ceremonies. The students donned masks and held signs that read, “Listen to the seniors,” “Let us walk” and “Honk for graduation.”

Gov. Phil Murphy announced in late May that New Jersey schools will be able to hold outdoor 2020 graduation ceremonies effective July 6.

Ceremony participants and attendees will need to adhere to social distancing guidelines. The governor emphasized that health and safety for all in attendance is priority while graduations are in session.
