May at the Oceanic Library

By Lori Draz

May is full of wonderful things, like Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and the return of outdoor activities like gardening and sports. Learn more about them all at the Oceanic Library. Their programs for all ages continue, along with many very entertaining Totally Awesome Tuesdays for grades K and up. All programs are held at 3:45 p.m. Registration is mandatory and parents must remain in library. Come on out and join in the fun.

Thursday, May 11 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. – Cupcake Wars! It’s the return of one of the most popular events of the year. This is always a packed house, as young bakers show off their skills to create a tasty and unique cupcake for bragging rights. This sweet event is limited to 20 entries only and fills up quickly, so don’t delay! Registration opens May 1 online at www.oceaniclib.org or at the front desk of the library. Trophies and bragging rights are awarded to first, second, third, and honorable mention in two categories: Best Tasting and Most Creative. This is open to ages 8-16 (under age 8 with a parent) and no professional bakers, please. Once again, Denise Kelleher and Jodi Wooley of Cups & Cakes will be back to judge. There will also be a special presentation on the latest decorating tools by Kim Megill of Wilton Cake Decorating and light refreshments will be served. The registration fee is $25 and includes a donation to the library. Spectators are free.

Starting Tuesday, May 30 – Tween-agers: Book in The Bottle Challenge for grades three through six. Guess the exact title of the book in the bottle for your chance to win a Comic Con 2016 prize. You have two weeks to guess.

Tuesday, June 6 – Kickoff Party for Summer Vacation Reading Party: “Tall Ships & Pirate Tales,” presented by Sciencetellers! The Vacation Reading Club starts on June 1 for all ages.
