How Marty Ryser Went from Mowing Lawns to Running the Area’s Largest Outdoor Supply Store

Many teenagers spend their summers looking for local work to make some money. As a teenager in Lincroft, Marty Ryser was no different. He started mowing lawns and then went to work for a local landscaper. He quickly realized this was something he could do on his own. He purchased his own equipment and recruited other teens to work for him. He named his new business Ryser’s Lawn & Tree. By his senior year, he was caring for more than 25 lawns.

After high school, Marty attended Brookdale Community College to study criminal justice with hopes of becoming a police officer – all while still running his lawn and tree business. But fate stepped in and changed his goals. He was getting busy, very busy with his business. Marty’s wife, Carol, said, “He knew he wanted to be his own boss. He kept working, and his business was getting so big he needed a place to store his equipment.”  Marty’s dad stepped in and told him about a long vacant property in Little Silver where he could store his mowers, grass seed and other supplies. He started bringing in other materials for his jobs such as mulch, stones, pavers, masonry, wheelbarrows, tools, etc.  Word got out that Marty was stocking professional, quality landscape supplies, and local landscapers and hardscapers started coming to buy supplies for their own businesses. Ryser’s Landscape Supply officially began in 1996. Carol said, “We were living on the property. There would be something new here every day. People would even knock on our door after hours asking to buy a bag of grass seed! Finally, we moved to another house in Little Silver.”

As business grew, so did Marty’s vision. He decided he wanted to stock everything people would need to make their outdoor space as comfortable, beautiful and livable as their indoors. They started carrying pergolas, outdoor kitchens, grills and pizza ovens, firepits of all shapes and types, outdoor fireplaces as well as outdoor lighting and heating.

Coming soon, they will take things to a whole new level when they open a 12,000-square-foot showroom where they will not only offer a large selection of outdoor furniture and accessories but also feature a home goods section with outdoor rugs, umbrellas, outdoor televisions, home decor, giftware and seasonal items. There will be outdoor living displays for inspiration and design ideas plus special events and workshops. Design help will be available, and for those who are not the do-it-yourself type, they will now offer “Ryser’s Connect” to help you find the right local contractors to do the job. This will truly be the destination one-stop shop for all your outdoor living needs.

Marty and Carol, along with their son, Devin, are keeping their Mom and Pop store values as they take on this big new venture. As they have for more than 26 years, the Ryser’s will continue to offer the highest quality products and best service around. The staff is all local, knowledgeable and always happy to help. Many have been with Marty since his teen days. So have many of his customers, many who were his original lawn clients. As Marty said, “We have made some wonderful friends through the years. They have watched us grow from the beginning.” Just as they are fulfilling a dream with their new showroom, they hope to help others fulfill their dreams of a beautiful outdoor living space.
