Colts Neck High School has always been open to forming new clubs with students spearheading their success. The high school has been the home to many exceptional students, one of which was Cory Aufiero.
Cory Aufiero was a student at the high school who graduated in 2017. He had a bright and infectious personality, never taking himself too seriously and always cheering up those around him. Family and friends say he constantly had a positive outlook, no matter what obstacle was thrown at him.
He passed away on Sept. 28, 2018 when he was struck by a vehicle while walking in New Brunswick. The Live Like Cory Foundation was created in his honor and currently serves to make its members and communities smile, and to support the passions that Cory had by sharing them with others. The foundation primarily serves grieving families, families in need, special needs children, food pantries and charitable organizations. Members of the organization often refer to it as an incredible and inspirational foundation that has a direct and positive impact on the local community.
The Live Like Cory Foundation recently created a club called the One Smile at a Time Club. This club aims to deliver smiles to anyone who is in need and is sponsored by the foundation.
Cory’s brother, Brandon Aufiero, said, “We recognized that there are so many students at Colts Neck High School that could use a friend to make memories with, and they often get overlooked. We wanted to be able to provide smiles and a shoulder to lean on to all of the students at CNHS that needed one, and that is where the name One Smile at a Time originated!”
This year, the club got together with another respected club at the high school: Cougar Connections. Cougar Connections holds meetings and creates events for students in unfortunate circumstances.
The One Smile at a Time Club is led by President Courtney Aufiero, Cory’s sister, and Guidance Counselor Gabrielle Labkovski. The entire membership of Cougar Connections is a part of the club as well.
Cougar Connections member Brielle Bravaco said, “The foundation sponsors Bingo nights and magic shows. They all come and hang out with the kids.” Members are involved not only in the high school but the local community as well.
One of Cory’s passions was golf, and the Live Like Cory Foundation’s next big event is a golf outing on Monday, July 24 at Bella Vista Country Club. For more information, email email@example.com.
