Charger running back Alec Montana (7) picks up yardage

The River Plaza (RPL) 12U Chargers took the field at the season finale with a 2-5 record. A win on the last game of the campaign would go a long way in wiping out the bad taste of a losing season.  Their previous losses likely became distant memories when they shutout the visiting Rumson – Fair Haven Bulldogs by a 19-0 tally.

Rumson – Fair Haven (RFH) exhibited the first scoring opportunity of the game, when in the second quarter they reached the RPL 32 yard line with a first and ten.  However, the threat was ended when Luke Varrichio broke through the line and sacked quarterback Brody Page on a fourth and five.

RPL parlayed the stop into a scoring drive going downfield on the ensuing series.  The Chargers reached the Bulldog 23 yard line on a 32 yard pass from quarterback Jake Czwakiel to Varrichio.  Two plays later Czwakiel hooked up on an aerial with Declan Leary for 22 yards to the one yard line.

Running back Alec Montana bulled over from one yard out on the next play.  The extra point snap was off the mark and holder Declan Leary scooped up the bouncing ball and scrambled into the end zone for the extra point.  The 7-0 lead held up to halftime.

The Bulldogs reached Charger territory in the opening moments of the second half.  However, Andrew Chemo and Jake Czwakiel dropped Bulldog running backs on consecutive plays and RPL took over on downs at the RFH 44.

On the first play of the following series quarterback Czwakiel completed a pass to James Mcdonald for 16 yards to the 28.  Two plays later running back Declan Leary rambled for a 22 yard run to the end zone breaking four tackles during the trip for a 13-0 advantage.

The final scoring came on a 65 yard three play drive.  On the second snap of the series quarterback Czwakiel bootlegged for 21 yards to the Rumson 44.  Encouraged by the success Czwakiel ran the same play again, ran downfield, picked up a block on the safety from Colin Gallagher at the 15 yard line and sprinted to the end zone for the 19-0 final score.

The Charger coaching cadre is led by Head Coach Justin Gallagher and staffed with Assistant Coaches Chris Casey, Solomon Chemo and Jason Czwakiel.
