Lincroft All-Star Softball Team Wins District Championship

By Tim Morris

The Lincroft Little League All-Star Softball Team captured the New Jersey Little League District 19 Championship this summer.

To repeat as District 19 champions, the Lincroft Little League All-Star Softball Team took the hard route. The all-stars had to play their way through the loser’s bracket and then get by an outstanding Marlboro squad in the final to win the District pennant.

“It’s testament to them that they bounced back to win three straight games,” said Lincroft manager Greg Peterson. “The girls played well.”

Lincroft waltzed through the first two rounds of the tournament with 17-7 and 18-1 triumphs before Marlboro slowed the runaway train with a 1-0 win.

The victory sent undefeated Marlboro to the championship and Lincroft to the loser’s bracket that would require all their resilience to prevail.

Lincroft beat Middletown 11-6 in that bracket’s final to get a rematch with Marlboro. However, having lost the first round, Lincroft had to beat Marlboro twice to win the championship. The all-stars employed all their heart and grit to win two games, 3-1 and 4-3, behind pitcher Celia Collings, who pitched every inning of the every game in the tournament.

The Lincroft-Marlboro duel featured two similar teams. Both featured superb pitching, excellent small ball (bunting and stealing bases) play and defensive strategies.

“Marlboro is a really good team,” said Peterson. “We got timely pitching, and the girls did a good job getting crucial hits.”

Afterwards, coaches on each side agreed on the high quality of play.

“We all said it was the best three games series of Little League we’ve seen,” said Peterson.

When Peterson got his first look at the Lincroft all-stars, he expected to make a run at the championship.

“[The coaching staff] knew we had a good team with the potential to go far,” he recalled. “They have a camaraderie with each other.”

Besides playing for Lincroft Little League, many of the all-stars play for their Middle School team and on the travel team, Lincroft Lightning.

“The girls take it seriously,” Peterson remarked. “They want to represent Lincroft well.”

The 2022 District 19 championship Lincroft all-stars are: Marina Canniff, Celia Collings, Mia Collins, Jordyn  Cowell, Reagan Crowley, Chloe Cunningham, Zoe Cunningham, Anna DeLizza, Caroline Esposito, Quinnlyn Heaney, Sadie Peterson and Helena Thompson.

Manager Peterson’s coaching staff included Brandon Collings and Steve DeLizza.
