Let Your Home Improvement Improve Someone’s Life

By Lori Draz

So many will be busy in the coming weeks and months working on home improvement projects, and that work can become good works for the community.

In January, Lunch Break and Family Promise of Monmouth County merged their efforts to better address homelessness in the community. They work closely together with the guests of Family Promise to help them achieve self-sufficiency through various services such as coaching, financial literacy, credit restoration and job training.

Eleanor Herdeen, of the Lunch Break Life Skills Center, said “It takes a village, and we all have a part to play. The Life Skills Program’s goal is providing the appropriate and relevant training so participants can acquire and maintain meaningful employment while improving future career prospects. We are always eager to partner with local businesses to identify and fill appropriate job opportunities that will benefit both participant and employer. If you have job openings within your business/organization, please share them with us at eherdeen@lunchbreak.org.”

They are also accepting donations of furniture and appliances which are so valuable as their clients are once again able to secure housing. If you are remodeling your home and are looking to get rid of appliances or furniture, consider giving Lunch Break a call at 732-747-8577, ext. 3201. The families they serve are in great need of these items and would be incredibly grateful.

Finally, the Life Skills Center is always looking for volunteers including coaches, subject matter experts and project managers from a various backgrounds including finance, engineering, education and social work.

To date, more than 7,000 volunteer hours have been donated to help their participants get the training they need to get their lives back on track.

The Life Skills Center is located at 648 Broad St. in Shrewsbury.
