January at the Oceanic Free Library

By Lori Draz

The Oceanic Free Library (OFL) wishes everyone a wonderful start to a new year of learning, relaxation and community. Here, you’ll find recipes and nutritional advice, exciting reading and lots of information to make 2022 the best ever.

The library thanks everyone for their generous support of the library’s Appeal Campaign. Donations are still being accepted, and all are thanked in advance for the generous support.

The Friday Knitters meets every week at 2 pm. All levels of knitters and crocheters are welcome.

Children’s Librarian Caitlin DiVincent has more of those at-home fun, “take and make” craft kits, available at the front desk on the first and 15th of every month. Each personally assembled bag contains all the pieces you’ll need to make a fun craft at home and a link for Virtual Story time and instructions.  First come, first served – one bag per child.

DiVincent invites you to Baby and Toddler Storytime on Tuesdays 10:30 to 11 am. Preschool and Family Storytime is from 2 to 2:30 pm on Tuesdays. Registration is mandatory for every StoryTime session. Sorry, drop-ins will not be admitted as session size is limited to eight children per session. All unvaccinated accompanying adults must wear masks.

Coming Wednesday, Jan. 19 for two special shows at 3:15 and 4:15 pm, it’s “Eyes of the Wild”! Meet exotic animals and reptiles right here in the library, such as a python, snake, hedgehog, rabbit, wallaby, or maybe a hissing cockroach or tarantula. Eyes of the Wild is an exotic animal rescue that provides proper care and forever homes to more than 175 rescued animals and 60 different species from throughout the animal kingdom. This presentation is made possible by a gift from a Rumson resident. There will be limited Seating at each live performance, and registration is required. The program is suitable for children ages 4 and up.

Each Tuesday from 3:45 to 4:30 pm, the library hosts some super fun In-House Children’s Programs. On Jan. 18, make your own play dough. On Jan. 25, there is a special visit from author Suzana Palej-DeLeon who will read her new book, “Suzy and her Pets.” There will be a Q&A and coloring pages based on the book. February includes Fingerprint Hearts on Feb. 1. On Feb. 8, in time for Valentine’s Day, make a Love Bug Puppet. On Feb. 15, it’s STEM Fluffy Slime, and the Lego Workshop returns on Feb. 22.

Start off the new year and sponsor a Meeker Book restoration. Call the library at 732-842-2692 for details on how you can protect these precious books that started the library’s collection in 1920. Many of these 100-year-old books need immediate rebinding and restoration. Sponsorship is $250 per book to pay for the professional historic book re-binder.

The library is also proud to announce their partnership with the NJ State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) and the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped to provide library materials designed specifically for those who have a disability that prevents them from reading regular print material. Visit the library to see a sample of the Talking Book device and a very easy to use sample book cartridge. The TBBC now has more than 100,000 Audiobooks available to borrow.

As always, each month features the works of local artists who display and make available for sale a vast array of art. There’s always some new and unique, and 20 percent of sales goes directly to support the library. This month, select the stained glass creations by Justin Sanchez, and give your wardrobe a gift with scarf designs and wardrobe accessories from Sue Roesler and Neckspressions. Coming in February, lavish yourself in pearlized accessories from Amanda Crowley, the Pearl Gurl. Joining her will be Helen Mastrianni with the beautiful hand painted glassware fromSipping Pretty Designs.

The library will also host a special Valentine’s Day Pop-up shop from Feb. 1 through 14, featuring boxes of homemade bath bombs, shower gels and lotions by Cathy Cirillo of Unique Creations by Triple C.

The library is now back to its regular hours. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday from 10 am to 7 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. The library will be closed on Martin Luther King Day and on Presidents Day.
