Implementing Improvements at Troublesome Intersection

Since 2015, Holmdel Township officials and the governing body have worked closely with the Holmdel Township Police Department to address residents’ concerns about the four-way intersection of Holland Road, Telegraph Hill Road, Takolusa Drive, and South Holland Road.

Holmdel Police Sgt. Christopher Cherney said that during this period, the police department has studied and documented incidents at the intersection and made “several recommendations” for upgrades.

In 2016, the police department began an aggressive enforcement initiative at the intersection. These efforts included patrolling for stop sign violations, speeding, and failure to yield the right of way. The education and enforcement campaign resulted in a significant reduction of motor vehicle collisions (MVC).

To date, Holmdel Police Department MVC Statistics for the intersection are eight incidents in 2015; eight in 2016; four in 2017; and three as of Sept. 19, 2018.

“The recommendations and enforcement initiatives that have been implemented have helped create a safer environment at the intersection,” said Mayor Tom Critelli. “Maintaining the security of our residents is the most important duty the governing body has, and we can’t thank our police department and township personnel enough for their continued efforts to improve conditions at the intersection.

But Critelli noted, “There is still more work to be done, and further improvements to come at this vitally important intersection.”

The township and police department are currently working with township engineer T&M Associates regarding those recommendations. Once the engineer completes the assessment, the governing body will collaborate with the police department to implement further traffic safety improvements at the intersection.
