Holmdel Residents Volunteer for SimplyHelp Foundation Humanitarian Trip

“They are here! They are here!” A little girl in her Sunday best cheered as waves of excitement reverberated through hundreds of villagers who lined up along the town’s dirt road to wait for the SimplyHelp Humanitarian group. Nestled deeply in the mountains of El Salvador, the village San Gerardor is one of the poorest regions and a must-go distribution site for the SimplyHelp Foundation’s humanitarian team. Now in existence for more than 18 years, SimplyHelp Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with United Nations Economic & Social Council Consultative Status, is active in 23 countries, with a strong presence in the United States, Central America, and Southeast Asia. Its mission to relieve poverty by providing emergency disaster relief, and shelter and care for the homeless elderly.

Mrs. Hui-Tu Yang, the vice president of the SimplyHelp Eastern Region and a longtime resident of Holmdel, described the trip to San Gerardor as follows: “We started the bus trip before sunrise. The three-hour bus ride was very tough. The roads were winding and bumpy and some members suffered from motion sickness.  But when we arrived and saw the excited and eager faces of so many happy waiting villagers, we no longer felt exhausted, but energized. They desperately needed the supplies we brought them.” Pumped with enthusiasm, the nine-person SimplyHelp team, along with village administrators, distributed a truckload full of rice, oil, food, and clothing to the families. Stationary and toys were distributed to the children.

San Gerardo is just one of the 15 sites that the SimplyHelp team visited during its five-day El Salvador humanitarian trip in April. The team specifically visited five El Salvador senior centers, which were built and sponsored by the SimplyHelp Eastern Region chapter. Each year, SimplyHelp Eastern Region holds an annual fundraiser charity ball. All proceed generated from this event fund the senior center projects. This annual charity ball is widely supported by many local residents and businesses around Monmouth County. Many Holmdel residents, including more than 25 students from local schools (Holmdel High School, High Technology High School, William Satz Middle School, Jersey Shore Chinese School, etc.) volunteer their time and skills for the fundraiser. Last year, the SimplyHelp Foundation Charity Ball was attended by over 300 supporters and generated more than $50,000 for the five senior centers.

“There is no administrative overhead. All humanitarian team members who went on the El Salvador trip paid their own way.  All of the donated goods and money from the charity ball are used to help people,” Mr. Kevin Tsay, the president of SimplyHelp Foundation Eastern Region, said proudly. “We want to give thanks to many Holmdel and Monmouth County business and residents. You all are the keys to the success of the SimplyHelp Humanitarian trip. Your good will and generous donations have made a huge difference in many people’s lives.”
