Holmdel Fencers Qualify for State Tournament

Holmdel High School fencers completed their season with the highest win totals in team history. The boys finished with a 6-5 record and the girls 4-5.
“Our boys’ team placed third at the district tournament and qualified for the state playoffs,” Head Coach Brendan Quinn said. “Our boys’ epee squad placed first in the district tournament.”

Top-performing athletes on the epee squad were seniors Alexei Novojilov (25-0), Augustus Giller (21-5) and Billy Szilasi (12-7). Others included on the roster were freshman James Aboujaoude, senior Dean Corniero, freshman Leo Giller, freshman Ben Hersch, sophomore Arthur Ortiz and junior Jaeson Shim. Novojilov, who maintained a perfect record all season, won the overall district title.
Junior Jett Londell (17-16) led the sabre team with support from fellow upperclassmen Zephan Alam, Jayden Chen and Alex Rokkos.
Freshman Luke Simon had an outstanding rookie year, with 22 match wins and just two losses. Joining him on the foil team were sophomores John King and Stephen Levinsky and juniors Jason Sobon and William Su.

Quinn shared, “Five of our fencers qualified for the individual state tournament: Alexei Novojilov, Augustus Giller, Billy Szilasi, Jordyn Goldson and Luke Simon.”
Goldson is a senior foil fencer on the girls’ team who recorded 20 wins and only three losses this winter.
Rounding out the girls’ roster are: junior Aislng Barker, sophomore Elena Chu, senior Alisa Dovgopol, freshman Alisa Ivanushkina, sophomore Mahika Jawa, junior Julia King, freshman Veronica Konchakovska, freshman Zoe Leeb, freshman Aanu Mabogunje, junior Moniayo Mabogunje, junior Jesse Pearson, junior Lily Ronan, freshman Aleena Shinde, junior Natalie Sokolov, sophomore Lillian Stafford and sophomore Kristen Wu.
