Heartbroken Owners Lose Pets in Middletown House Fire

A Middletown house has burned to the ground as neighbors are now rallying to raise money for the heartbroken homeowners.

The home, located on Franklin Avenue in the Leonardo section of Middletown, was ablaze Monday night, with smoke billowing from windows on both floors. The Middletown Township Fire Department responded to a 911 call from neighbors who say the elderly resident of the home asked for their help. Leonardo and Belford crews combated the flames while the elderly residents watched years of memories go up in smoke, neighbor Tara Kelly said.

Kelly described the homeowners as “friendly, and [they] always cared for neighborhood cats.”

She said they lost four cats and a 45-year-old macaw parrot in the fire. Kelly has since set up a GoFundMe to help raise money for her neighbors.

“I set this up because they are older, and I am thankful for having lots of social media friends,” she said. “They will need help.”

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
