Happy 100th Anniversary to Bahrs Landing

By Lori Draz

The restaurant business is a trendy one. Few survive the 10 or 20 year mark, but Bahrs Landing has accomplished a staggering feat: they’ve been in business for 100 years! Impressive? To say the least, and while there have been expansions and repairs after storms, the restaurant has remained a family business, delivering delicious fresh-off-the-boat seafood, award-winning chowder, landlubber meals, and a feisty Oktoberfest celebration each fall.

It has one of the most scenic locations, at the foot of the bridge at the entrance to the Highlands. Its bright red sign is a navigational landmark for many and a beacon for seafood fans. The restaurant has a detailed history that you can read about on their website, but the real treat comes with a visit. The walls are adorned with all kinds of fascinating historic photos and nautical memorabilia. One of the most interesting things to see is the collection of 33 model ships from ship model builder Henry Schaefer’s collection. Each is an exquisite creation.

The restaurant has been owned by Ray Cosgrove with his son Jay, the fourth generation great grandson of the founders. Together, they have expanded the facility to include Moby’s Outside Deck & Lobster as well as the original marina facility. The family and their experienced, dedicated staff have served more than 12 million customers.

Bahrs offers outdoor dining, a lively indoor and outdoor bar, a lunch, dinner, and kids’ menu, and a bar menu, with plenty of specials. In this centennial year, there is a six-foot-tall birthday cake at the entrance. They even have a gift shop and several bottled and jarred sauces that you can bring home for a taste of the shore all year long.

Jay Cosgrove says, “Thank you to our millions of guests and tens of thousands of loyal employees and friends! We could not have made it without you. We have polished the brass and tightened the running boards to make the centennial year the best one yet. New menu items include some that appeared in the early days, as well chef’s specials. Come by often and check our website for specials and vintage offerings.”

Bahrs Landing is a living piece of history in the truest sense. It’s packed with loyal local customers and is a must on most vacationers’ list of things to do at the shore. Bahrs Landing is located at 2 Bay Avenue in Highlands. Call (732) 872-1245 or visit to check out this delicious taste of history.
