“I am surprised that I was able to run as fast and calculated as I could in the pitch black,” Trish Bulinsky said. “I’m shocked I didn’t kill myself mid-run.”

Bulinsky, a former resident of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, recently decided to undergo the ultimate physical and mental challenge by participating on a survival show for the bravest. She trekked to the wilderness to film an episode of one of Discovery Channel’s many endurance-driven shows, “Naked and Afraid.”

According to IMDb, “Naked and Afraid” is a “reality show where two strangers (typically one male, one female) try to survive in the wild for 21 days, naked.” Participants are not given food or water. They must build their own shelter, craft their own weapons and tools, and live and work with their partner in a desolate location for three weeks. Bulinsky couldn’t reveal details about her partner before the episode aired, but she shared that the two tackled tough situations with perseverance and humor.

She also shared that the show is “100 percent real.” With camera crews closely following, Bulinsky and her partner faced danger and desperation throughout their journey, all of their struggled captured on film for audiences across the country.

This isn’t Bulinsky’s first head-to-head with nature. She also starred on Discovery Channel’s “Out of The Wild: The Alaska Experiment.”

“I know I can survive with clothes and a gun, so this was the next challenge for me.”

Bulinsky admitted she is a spur-of-the-moment type of person and felt she had been training her entire life for this. She grew up hunting with her dad in North Jersey and spent days offshore fishing.

A mother of three and a grandmother, Bulinsky drew inspiration from her family as she braved the dangers of nature.

She candidly shared that her nearly 30-year-old son struggled with opioid addiction, and she felt that her time in the wilderness brought her closer to him and the challenges he faced during the darkest points of his life.

“For me, that was the closest I have ever been able to come, never quite understanding that mental and physical battle,” she said. “This was probably the closest I have come to that whilst being in the jungle.”

With a daughter and granddaughter also watching, she is hoping they are able to draw from her experience and learn from her strength.

Expect to see a balance of survival technique along with much-needed humor in times of distress on this season’s “Naked and Afraid.” Support, laugh and survive alongside Bulinsky and her partner on May 12 at 8 pm on Discovery Channel.
