Fifth Annual Unified Game Day Brings Holmdel Students Together

The Holmdel School District held its fifth annual Unified Game Day on May 16 at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel. Colts Neck, Little Silver, and Upper Freehold School Districts also attended, along with the Harbor School. More than 200 special needs and general education peers were involved in the event. The Holmdel athletes and their peers were together to learn skills during the year in the Adaptive Physical Education classes.

All students enjoyed yoga and multiple soccer skills at their stations. Attending as the trainers were the Holmdel male and female soccer teams, as well as Holmdel’s Team Unify. Holmdel related services professionals were onsite and assisted in modifying the skills. Lunches were donated by Best Market, Chartwells, Dearborn Market, Delicious Orchards, ShopRite, Food Circus Supermarket, Stop & Shop, and the Village School PSA.Β  Transportation for Holmdel students was donated by Helfrich and Sons, Keyport Autos, and Unlimited Autos. Music was supplied by Hotspot DJ Nicky Paolantonio.

The driving force behind the Unified Game Day is Project Unify, a Special Olympics peer program designed to promote and develop understanding, acceptance, and respect between young people. It motivates youth to become advocates for and together with all people, thus building a school community where all young people are agents of change. The Special Olympics movement unlocks the joy of sports to inspire people to open their minds to accept, include, and value people with intellectual and physical disabilities in all aspects of life.
