Favorite Places From My Week Spent Shopping Local

By Julia Mortimer

Sickles Market

There is something so charming and lovely about supporting a local business. With the current climate, there holds even more importance in buying your coffee beans at the local shop and shucks of corn from the farmers market up the street. I challenged myself to only shop local for a week straight. It was a feat I was eager to complete!

Sickles Market, Little Silver

I began my week with some light grocery shopping at Sickles Market, picking up the essentials – eggs, oat milk, chicken cutlets – you get the idea. I also bought a really delicious kale salad for lunch. If you’re in the area and looking for a quick lunch, Sickles has got you covered! If Little Silver is a little further than you’d like to travel, another location is set to open in Red Bank this August.

The Local Line, Red Bank

The Local Line is the quintessential business for support of local vendors. The mission of the business is to support New Jersey creators and give local artists a platform to showcase their products. I picked up an essential oils spray to help improve sleep, meant to be used on your pillow. While I was checking out, next to the register was a big jar full of cards from a variety of local businesses.

River Road Books, Fair Haven

River Roads Books is a tiny bookstore nestled between Lupo Pizzeria and Flair Cleaners. I was in the mood to take a whiff of a new book and possibly buy one for beach days and rainy days. Bookstores are so important to support because you don’t come by that many anymore since the wave of Amazon. I decided to pick up “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. I’ve heard such good things about his books, and since I’ve graduated college, I’ve been craving some insightful and thought-provoking information.

The Bagel Store, Colts Neck

What’s a story about local New Jersey businesses without a classic bagel store? This one, next to Rook Coffee in Colts Neck, is home to some amazing bagels. I, of course, got a pork roll egg and cheese, which was phenomenal.

FORGE, Red Bank

I’m a sucker for a good home goods store, and this one recently opened! The trendy spot has beautiful pieces of kitchenware, skincare and decor to add some flare to your home.

Red Bank Farmers Market, Red Bank

There are a number of really great farmers markets in the area, but this one is conveniently five minutes from my house. Each Sunday, I browse the market and always pick up a bouquet of flowers. They have such beautiful ones!

The Seafarer, Highlands

The Seafarer is an outdoor bar that makes you feel like you’re on vacation on a wonderful island. With views of Sandy Hook and food by Local Smoke BBQ, it’s just the spot to de-stress and enjoy a drink with friends. Many people have held events at the scenic spot as well!

The Flaky Tart, Atlantic Highlands

Ah, the bakery responsible for my love handles. I have never eaten something here that I didn’t love. Photographed is the Bourbon Glazed Cinnamon Raisin Bun.
